Ollie Whistler
In his short time in the sport, Ollie has made his mark as an upcoming young Australian talent! This has recently been recognised by Triathlon NSW whom have selected Ollie to be supported by the NSW Endurance Development Squad. This was introduced by Triathlon NSW to help guide and fund Australia’s best young endurance athletes in pursuing a full time international racing career.
Ollie had a very early introduction to Triathlon through Australian legend, family friend and mentor Greg Welch whom he watched become the first non-American to win the Ironman World Championships in 1994. It was also this year his father raced, and a family pact that they would someday complete an Ironman as a family was formed. This pledge was put on hold throughout his schooling at ‘The Kings School,’ and was not until he graduated that Ollie competed in his first Triathlon, the Gold Coast Half Ironman 2006 and finished 3rd in the 18-24 age group in a time of 4 hours 30 minutes. Shortly after, the Whistlers would live a lifelong dream and completed Ironman Western Australia together, all with podium finishes, including Ollie’s 3rd 18-24 age group against fine competition.
Having only just turned 22 years, Triathlon now sees Ollie consistently placing Top 5 as a professional in Australia’s Half Ironman and Ironman series. He is currently taking a year off full time work and study to concentrate on becoming one of Australia’s top Triathletes. He hopes to race in Australia until April and then has six months planned in Europe and the US to help gain race experience over the 70.3 and Olympic distances, and build networks for future travels. Ollie believes it’s what he’s always wished and aspires to become one of the worlds greats such as Mark Allen, Greg Welch and Craig Alexander… With his passion, desire and dedication to his sport, one can only guess what the future holds for this youngster.
Introducing triathlon and/or general health and fitness to others is also a part of Ollie’s passions and interests, which has seen him working as a full time employee at Clarence St Cyclery. This goes hand in hand with his goals and commitments to triathlon and has enabled him to put adequate time into training and racing whilst gaining a broader understanding of the industry and its networks. There is more than just being at the top of the triathlon scene for Ollie, foreseeing himself as a major influence to the growth of triathlon as an international status sport.
